London final piece Preparation.

I visited London in June for my project of Growth and Decay. I looked into graffiti and youth culture. I looked at graffiti as it shows gaps and floors in modern day society. Graffiti is a away to express people emotions or views. It promotes problems and views for across the world, for example one of the graffiti pieces says “Don’t stop the dreams, Boys and Girls”. This suggests that the artist could have had a troubled childhood and they weren’t allowed to be what they want to be. For example they could be gay or lesbian and there parents didn’t agree with it or that they got bullied for it. Graffiti may have helped them express there feelings.

Task 2 Homework – Photos.

I shot theses photos at a disused railway line near the village of Birdingbury, Warwickshire. I have focused my images on Graffiti and also the factor of neglect. I have talked about neglect before and i think it links with the photos above by the general public letting the railway get overgrown and vandalised by youths. Graffiti shows a decay in society with nothing for people to do o they go out to vandalise other people’s property. I have looked Joel Sternfeld  who looks at disused railways in america. I haven’t worked with any of my photos to improve them but i want to work in Photoshop and the darkroom to increase my level further. One of my photos is of a wall with graffiti on it. The wall has the slogan “Hillmorton Crew”. This is used as a form of identity and a marker for a territory. I think graffiti is interesting as people express their feelings and artistic sides with producing images or words. Some youths use graffiti as away to express their anger and emotions. I like the way i have captured the light with  the “Hilmorton photo” with it being divided into 2 showing a dark and light side to the graffiti shown.

Joel Sternfeld is a american photographer and he was born in 1944 in New York City. The photo above is taken from one of his early shoots when he experimented with colour. This photo was taken in Chicago in they year 2000 on a early september morning. This photograph represents loss or replacement. In this case loss of a network or being connected. In America the rail network played a big part with the national industry with raw materials being shipped nationwide. This photograph shows how urban development takes over when money is involved.

Stephen Gill is a British photographer who grew up and still currently lives in Hackney in London. He has always worked in the photography industry from a very young age. Now he is a freelance photographer. His work with the urban landscape just shows what can be hidden from people. His work with billboards  shows that they can be used to hide things or promote. The photo was taken in Hackney and in front of the billboard stands houses. The caption for the photograph is children should never be neglected. This suggest that nobody really cars about the scrap yard its just a pile of rubbish and this links with that caption completely.

Kate Mellor is a British landscape photographer best known for her series of panoramic images and her pinhole camera images. The series from which the above photo was taken is called ‘In The Steps Of Robert Pinnacle’. She was commissioned to take photographs of european spa towns and took photos with a pinhole camera. The reason why the series is called ‘Robert Pinnacle’ is because she followed that artists ideas as he visited the same places.

Photoshop. 6 – Adding Filters.

I am going to experiment next with different effects to allow my paper to. represent a different form. To see this click on filter than filter gallery.

Once in the filter gallery you have a lot of filters to chose from. This can create a mood – Hot or cold. To select a filter click on the drop down menu in selected filter folder and then press on it to see a instant change of the image.

This is my chosen image with the filter glowing edges added to it. When you have selected the filter you can change the amounts to your selected specification. This completely changes the look of the image.

Photoshop. 5 – Cropping.

I have selected this part of the image to crop as I think it is the strongest part of my image, as there is most of the detail in this area with the curve and the shadows where the paper curls.

I have selected this part of the image to crop as I think it is the strongest part of my image, as there is most of the detail in this area.

Photoshop. 4 – Using Levels.

Screen Shot 2013-03-15 at 07.40.09

To change the levels, you click image, then adjustment and select ‘levels’.

Screen Shot 2013-03-15 at 07.40.33

My image did not need adjusting too much- as it was already fairly balance, although some darker tones were possibly needed, so to do this I moved my indictors to the right.

Screen Shot 2013-03-15 at 07.40.45

My image is now balanced.

Photoshop.3 -Experimenting with colour and black and white.

Screen Shot 2013-02-08 at 09.58.03

I have created another layer of the same image; this is highlighted on the bottom right off the page.

Screen Shot 2013-02-08 at 09.58.35

I am now changing the copied layer to black and white.

Screen Shot 2013-02-08 at 09.58.54

Again i could change the mood of the image by changing the colours when it is in black and white.

Screen Shot 2013-02-08 at 10.00.00

I have used the lasso tool to select a part of an image. Once I do this I can rub out the black and white and make it colour again.

Screen Shot 2013-02-08 at 10.09.32

Now i have changed a part of the image back to colour.

Using Photoshop. 2 – changing image to black and white.

Screen Shot 2013-02-08 at 09.36.41

When changing  photos to black and white in photoshop you go to image, then adjustments and then black and white.

Screen Shot 2013-02-08 at 09.36.48

When in the black and white settings you can make the image warm or cold. This gives effect to the image.
